The Avant STAMP for ASL exam measures receptive and productive competencies for American Sign Language. It is a computer-based test that consists of two parts: 1) receptive knowledge, in which students watch videos and answer questions based on the information received, and 2) productive knowledge, in which students film themselves signing in response to questions or prompts given in the test. This test is taken in the testing center, and computers and webcams are provided. The duration of the test is roughly one hour.

Students for Whom the Test is Recommended or Appropriate
Students who have prior knowledge of American Sign Language (regardless of how it was acquired) and who need to determine placement in UT's ASL course sequence should take this test. It is also available to students who wish to earn credit by exam for part or all of the three-course beginning and intermediate course sequence (ASL 601D, 610D, and 311D). If taken for placement, students can also choose to accept course credit for any levels they place out of.
Students transferring college credit in American Sign Language are not required, but are strongly encouraged, to take this test and to use the results to help them choose their first course in American Sign Language at UT Austin. Transfer students may also use the placement test to earn additional credit in American Sign Language or to earn credit for a lower-division course for which they were exempted without credit at another institution. In no way will American Sign Language credit already earned be jeopardized by the results of this test.
