Spring 2024 Urdu Exam

Students who wish to attempt CBE (credit by exam) for beginning and/or intermediate Urdu should review the following information. The Spring 2024 Urdu exam will take place on Friday, April 19th, 2024 at 3:00PM. Please read the following information from the Department of Asian Studies carefully.


UT Austin Urdu Placement Exam

Date: Friday, April 19th, 2024

Time: 3:00PM-6:00PM

Location: BUR 228, UT Austin Main Campus

All students taking the exam will need to have an official photo identification (UT ID) card with them at the time of the Placement Exam.  They will also need to bring with them a form that they will receive from Student Testing Services after they have paid the required fees. Please see below for information on obtaining the required form.
 

ORAL EXAM DETAILS:

Please contact Professor Shahnaz Hassan for holding a separate slot for the Oral Exam on a first come first serve basis. All student questions regarding this oral exam may be referred to Professor Hassan at snzhasan@austin.utexas.edu.   

DETAILS:   

All students who appear for the placement exam will take one exam. On this exam, if they receive 90% or higher, then they will receive credit (in hours only), for two years of Urdu (Urdu 506, 507, 312K and 312L = 16 hours). If the students receive a score in the range of 75-89, then they will receive credit (in hours only) for one year of Urdu (Urdu 506 & 507 = 10 hours). The students will not receive a letter grade for the same exams since we only give letter grades for courses completed in residence at the University of Texas at Austin.  Credit earned by exam appears on a transcript with a grade of "CR" for each course earned. Thus, the exam will not have any impact on the students' GPA.  

CONTENT:   

The exam will require the students to write in the Urdu script. The exam will include translation exercises (from English to Urdu & Urdu to English) as well as Urdu reading comprehension.  

  • Oral Proficiency 40%   
  • Reading/Writing Comprehension 60%  

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

All examinees should contact Student Testing Services to obtain a Department Administered Exam (DAE) form prior to the test. Forms can be obtained digitally by emailing studenttesting@austin.utexas.edu. When requesting the form, please include your UT EID.
