Viewing Course Evaluation Results
Within 6-8 weeks of the deadline to complete your evaluations, also known as the survey fill-out window, student ratings are made available to the campus community.
In the fall semester of 2022, the University transitioned to a new course evaluation system. Results from both the old and new systems are available using the links below. Please note, in addition to the adoption of a new course evaluation system, the University also adopted a new questionnaire. You can view the current questionnaire here and the legacy questionnaire here.
Refer to our Guide to Interpreting Results section below for details on the scale and weights associated with the core course evaluation questions.
Are you an instructor or administrator?
We have separate pages for faculty and administrators on viewing evaluation reports.
Expanded Results Access
Expanded results are available to anyone who has an active UT EID (i.e., current students, faculty, and staff). Results include responses to the 5 course questions and 6 instructor questions, along with average ratings for the department, school/college, and university. Open-ended comments are not included. View all survey questions here.
Evaluations After Summer 2022
Public Results
Public results are available to anyone. They contain the responses to two questions ("Overall this course was..." and Overall this instructor was...") for all instructors and courses, along with average ratings for the department, school/college, and university.
Evaluations After Summer 2022
Exceptions
To preserve the anonymity of students, ratings are only published online, both on the Expanded Results Site as well as the Public Site, if they meet the following criteria:
- The survey received at least five (5) responses,
- At least twenty percent (20%) of the total enrolled student population responded to the survey, AND
- The course was evaluated using a standard form designed for instructors. (i.e.: Results for Teaching Assistants are never published online unless they served as the official instructor-of-record)
Guide to Interpreting Results
The goal of course evaluation process at UT Austin is to drive teaching excellence and to support continuous improvement in teaching and learning experiences. Course evaluations provide snapshots of student perspectives on their course-level learning experiences. Most experts on teaching evaluation advise that no individual method gives the complete picture of an instructor's teaching effectiveness, multiple and diverse measures, on multiple occasions, are advised to give a full picture of the teaching effectiveness of a particular instructor. Moreover, other factors, such as size of class, level of the class, and content of the course, can cause small variations in the ratings. Therefore, student perspectives for a particular instructor or course should be interpreted as a snapshot, and not as providing complete information on the teaching effectiveness of that instructor.
The two sets of scales used for core evaluation questions and the associated weights are:
- Strongly Agree (5)
- Agree (4)
- Neutral (3)
- Disagree (2)
- Strongly Disagree (1)
And
- Excellent (5)
- Very Good (4)
- Satisfactory (3)
- Unsatisfactory (2)
- Very Unsatisfactory (1)
The Mean is calculated by adding all of the weights for a single question and dividing by the number of respondents. The course workload question is not averaged. The number of students (e.g. respondents) marking each option is reported for each of the items. These frequency distributions provide information about the level of student ratings and the spread and shape of the class distribution of responses. The distributions thus provide a picture of student perception of a course.
